The statue was built in 1956. This is the upper portion of the body of Sir Alexander Fleming which was mounted on a crafted stone.
Dr. Lluís Trias de Bes, a friend of Alexander Fleming invited him to visit Barcelona to open the research department of the Municipal Infectious Diseases Hospital. Following that, Alexander visited Barcelona in May 1948 for a 12-day visit. Barcelona paid a tribute to Alexander Fleming in Carrer del Carme, Barcelona, Spain, with a monument sculpted by Catalan sculptor Josep Manuel Benedicto.
